GP Synergy brought together cultural mentors from NSW and ACT Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services (ACCHSs) accredited for GP training, for a workshop in Newcastle in August.
The role of the cultural mentor is to support GP registrars training in Aboriginal health training posts, and to participate in activities that will enhance the registrars’ cultural capabilities whilst they undertake their training. Cultural mentors are either an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander staff member of the ACCHS or an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander member of the community that is nominated by the ACCHS.
All 29 GP Synergy accredited Aboriginal health training facilities have a cultural mentor attached to their services.
